"I don't care if I pass your test, I don't care if I follow your rules. If you can cheat, so can I. I won't let you beat me unfairly- I'll beat you unfairly first." -Orson Scott Card, Ender's Game
The Ender's Game movie comes out this weekend. I just finished reading Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, myself. I was uncertain if I would like the book, however I loved it. The story pace kept up and it made me reflect on the kind of person I want to be.
I learned how to make a spaceship from a fan resource. Check out the link here.
Here is the ship image from their blog. I will upload my picture soon! Until then enjoy the movie, the book, and the crafting!
My attempt at the ship.

Jack-o-lantern Jar
"On Halloween, the parents sent their children out looking like me." -Rodney Dangerfield
HAPPY HALLOWEEN! I love Halloween. There are so many wonderful things about it. Mostly candy and costumes. But there are the scary movies, the ghost shows, and Goosebump books. I always liked the choose your own ending ones. This pumpkin dish has a few more treats than tricks.

Leaf Bowl
"There are very few monsters that warrant the fear we have of them". -Andre Gide
As an elementary student during free reading time, I would always want to read the book In a Dark, Dark Room by Alvin Schwartz and pictures by Dirk Zimmer. I think it was because my parents were afraid of the gremlins before they turned evil, so I had an unnaturally early rebellious stage of being into scary things. Okay, probably not, but I do remember that book.
A not scary at all tradition could be serving candy in fun and festive ways. I know I make a lot of bowls and dishes, but that is because they are so simple and can be changed out as the season or mood presents. Also, they tend to be rather cost effective.

- Elmer's glue or mod podge (on hand)
- Bag of fabric leafs ($1)
- Paint Brush (on hand)
Directions:
- Glue leafs onto the balloon to the size bowl you want. Make sure to overlap them a little. Let dry overnight.
- Apply a second layer of glue. A paint brush helps to spread out glue quickly and easily. Let dry over night.
- Pop balloon and remove excess glue.
Great for use all fall long!

Pumpkin Candy Dish
"Vegetables are a must on a diet. I suggest carrot cake, zucchini bread, and pumpkin pie." -Jim Davis
Sadly, those are all foods that I can't eat. Not because of a diet, but because of allergies. (Okay, so I can eat them if I make them myself). If you are looking for something cute to serve trick-or-treaters candy in, try this easy to make pumpkin candy dish. The cost of all materials was under $3!

Pumpkin Jack by Will Hubbell is about a boy craving his first Jack-O-Lantern, which he names Jack. As Jack starts to rot he puts him in his garden, and come spring he finds a surprise. This is my Pumpkin Jack from two years ago, for some odd reason he doesn't want to rot.

Dryer Vent Pumpkin
Linus: "You don't believe the story of the Great Pumpkin? I thought little girls always believed everything that was told to them. I thought little girls were innocent and trusting."
Sally: "Welcome to the 20th century!" -It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
Dryer vent duct pumpkins are all over this season. This could be because they are simple yet elegant. A perfect craft for fall. The great thing is, besides the spray paint and the dryer vent duct, everything was either on hand or bought from a dollar store.

Zombie Coffee Cozy
"I think that most people would rather face the light of a real enemy than the darkness of their imagined fears." -Max Brooks, World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War
With Halloween just around the corner, I wanted to focus on some more festive books and craft projects. Although I read this book way back in May (and saw the movie when it came out this summer), World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks is a great book about human nature when faced with a crisis. It just so happens that the crisis faced in this book is the zombie apocalypse, so that makes it even more awesome. A few months ago I found these zombie coffee cozies over at Geek Crafts, so I knew I had to try them. My main problem was, I didn't know how to crochet. Well, that is a lie. I was once taught how to make the basic chain, but never learned anything further than that. With some help from the videos over at about.com, I taught myself the basics and was able to make my own zombie coffee cozy.

The main changes to my design were that I used a J size hook and my base row was 12 instead of 11 chains, and I attached my button loop differently. Still a lot of work in order to say I am good at crocheting, but its better than just a chain.
If you want to see something really frightening, check out my first attempt at the cozy. My chains were dwindling down quickly.

Elegy (Book 4 of the Watersong Series) Craft
"We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch- we are going back to whence we came." -John F. Kennedy
Elegy is the fourth and final book of the Watersong Series by Amanda Hocking. It concludes the story of Gemma, Harper, Penn, Thea, Daniel, and Alex. This book is full of celebrations, tears, and some some good old fighting. In sticking with the happy, celebration theme, I made a wine glass beach candles.

- Using the needle nose pliers, curl the ends of the wire.
- Fold the sides of the wire, in order to create the floating look of the candle over the sand/shells.
All of these projects would be amazing center pieces for a Watersong themed book club meeting. They certainly got me ready for book club this month! Hope you enjoyed the nautical themed crafting!

Tidal (Book 3 of the Watersong series) Craft
"My experience is that you can't possibly win against whatever the tidal wave is that's coming at you." -Lorenzo di Bonaventura
Tidal is the third book in the Watersong series by Amanda Hocking. This book is about bonding together as friends and trying to break the curse. All friendships need a good friendship bracelet, so I took the basic chevron and turned it into a friendship bracelet for any sailor.

Tidal is the third book in the Watersong series by Amanda Hocking. This book is about bonding together as friends and trying to break the curse. All friendships need a good friendship bracelet, so I took the basic chevron and turned it into a friendship bracelet for any sailor.
Materials:
- Three different colors of floss
- Gold/brown polymer clay
- Lobster claw
- Jump ring
- Glue (any type)
Directions:
- Roll out three strands of the clay. One long, one medium, and one small.
- With the long strand loop it over at the top and pinch to make the top of the anchor. Spiral a skinny strand of clay around this strand. Attach a small triangle of clay to the end of this piece.
- Attach two small triangles of clay to the ends of the medium strand. Mold this into a C and attach to the long strand to form the hooks of the anchor.
- With the small strand of clay pinch to form ball type ends and attach the middle towards the top of the long strand.
- Bake for 10 minutes at 225 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Attach an arms length amount of floss to each side of the anchor.
- Follow a chevron pattern on each side, until it is the right size for your (or a friends) wrist. If you do not know how to make a chevron bracelet, I found an easy tutorial here.
- On one side attach the lobster claw to the end of the friendship bracelet, and on the other side attach the jump ring. Make sure to double knot.
- Dab glue on the knots in order to make sure they do not unravel.
This would also make a great anklet for when you are lounging on the beach. Only 8 more months until beach season (at least this far north)!

Lullaby (Book 2 of the Water Song Series) Craft
"Harper swallowed the lump in her throat and shook her head, trying to shake off the feeling. Of course Gemma would live here again. Harper wouldn't stop searching until Gemma was home." -Lullaby, Amanda Hocking
Lullaby is the second book in the Watersong series by Amanda Hocking. In this book Harper, Alex, Daniel, and Marci go on a quest to find Gemma and bring her back to Capri, MD. Because every good lost soul needs something to light the way back, I made a beach candle to celebrate this book.

Wake (Book 1 of the Watersong series) Craft
"I guess what I'm trying to say is that you can't live somebody else's life for them. They have to make their own choices, and sometimes all we can do is to learn to live with them." -Wake, Amanda Hocking
Wake is the first book in the Watersong series by Amanda Hocking. It is about a Gemma, her family and friends, and a group of three strange, but beautiful girls. Gemma lives in a seaside town, loves swimming in the ocean, and finds friendships and family to be very important parts of her life. I do not want to give things away, but at one point in time Gemma has to drink this concoction. This inspired my seaside wine bottle craft.
Materials:
I am imagining this on a porch during the summer, with some twinkling strands of lights inside. No wonder Gemma loves the sea so much; it makes for some pretty images.

Directions:
- Make sure the wine bottle is clean and the label is completely removed from the bottle. Here is a link to an easy way to remove the glue residue from the label.
- Attach jute to the top of the wine bottle neck with some hot glue. Continue to wrap around the bottle neck, until you have the desired amount wrapped around. Hold end in place with hot glue.
- Attach a strand of jute form the start of the wrapped jute with hot glue.
- Using hot glue attach the desired number of shells to the strand of jute. I used four shells and attached them in decreasing order of size. The big shell on top I glue directly to the strand of jute as well as the wrapped portion for extra support.

Finishing a book series
This months book club book was Wake by Amanda Hocking. Of course, since it was part of the Watersong series, I had to read all the books. This week I am dedicating my blog posts to crafts for this series, leading up to the weekend adventures of the book club meeting. However, as we all know finishing a series can be tough. Good thing there is still the prequel for me to read!
Get ready for some nautical inspired crafting this week! If you want to get a jump start check out my previous post about making sand bowls.

Kingdom Hearts: Keyblade Earrings
Xemnas: "Denizens of light, answer this: why do you hate the darkness?"
Mickey Mouse: "Aw, we don't hate it. It's just kinda... scary. But the world's made of light AND darkness. You can't have one without the other, 'cause darkness is half of everything. Sorta makes ya wonder why we are scared of the dark..." -Kingdom Hearts 2
A few weekends ago I got to meet up with one of my friends and her and my boyfriend kept talking about video games. So, I wasn't too surprised after asking her what she wanted for earrings, that she said keyblade earrings from Kingdom Hearts. If you have read my previous posts about earring making this should be pretty easy to figure out how to do. I used necklace chain to attach the Mickey Mouse ears to the body of the keyblade. The colors of the clay used was gray (or silver if you have it), yellow, blue, and black.
Looking back I wish the key part would have turned out better, but this works as a starting point. Besides, there are many keyblades left to make...

Water For Elephants Drinking Glasses
"And then I laugh, because it's so ridiculous and so gorgeous and it's all I can do not to melt into a fit of giggles. So what if I'm ninety-three? So what if I'm ancient and cranky and my body's a wreck? If they're willing to accept me and my guilty conscience, why the hell shouldn't I run away with the circus?" -Sara Gruen, Water for Elephants
The book Water for Elephants is told through the eyes of an aging gentleman who once worked for the circus. This book is a fantastic love story that brings life into falling in love. Also, you see how a person caring can make all the difference, especially in the life of one elephant.
This craft was seen a few times on pinterest, so I decided to try it with a group of friends. It seemed fitting for the book because of the bright colors and the fact that it holds water. These are simple to make and all turned out different.

Book Club Field Trips
"Enthusiasm is excitement with inspiration, motivation, and a pinch of creativity." -Bo Bennett
Sometimes, instead of coming up with my own project, I like to go somewhere where the projects are ready and people are available to teach new techniques or provide feedback as I am working on it. There are many places to go that allow you to paint your own pottery, make different types of jewelry, paint, learn how to knit or crochet, ect. A few months back I posted about a bachelorette party I had been to where we worked on paintings. One of my fellow book club members was also with me and we had a lot of fun. The plate I painted and the necklace I made came from The Fire. Although I did not go with my book club to The Fire, these kind of places would be a great place to go, discuss the book we read, and engage in a project (related or unrelated to the book). If you are struggling to find a store near you to do some of these things, many major craft stores have weekend classes or events that you could attend. Some of which are even free. So, even if you struggle to come up with an idea for your book club craft, there is always a field trip to a local craft store or studio where you can create your very own unique items.

Magazine Garbage Bins
"We abuse land because we see it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect." -Aldo Leopold
The natural world around us is degrading on a daily basis.
What we currently describe as nature will likely not be the same definition our
grandchildren will use. Aldo Leopold, a founding father of American ecology,
understood this long before most other people. In his book, A Sand County Almanac, he cries for
action to change the way humans interact with land. In this book, published in 1949, Leopold elegantly combines
natural history, descriptions of species, and his own philosophy. He stresses
that we must change the way we see nature and emphasizes the importance of
developing a land ethic, or a responsible relationship between people and the
land they inhabit. In describing his land ethic idea, Leopold wrote, “A thing
is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of the
biotic community. It is wrong when it tends otherwise.”
I used the concept from the Big A** Book of Crafts for the circle based garbage bin, which lead me to create my own design. (Hint: If you want even circles like mine, use the cap of the glue stick as a mold). Here are the directions for the tube garbage bin.
Materials:
- Glue Sticks (Elmer's Xtreme works really well)
- Magazines or Glossy Advertisements
- Scissors
- Hot Glue Gun and Hot Glue Sticks
- Modge Podge
Directions:
1. Cut out strips of magazines. Make sure they are not thicker than an 1/8th of an inch.
2. Take the glue stick and apply glue to one of the strips. Roll this strip on top of itself to start forming a disk.
3. Continue adding strips to the disk in order to create the base for the garbage can. (I used my bathroom garbage can as a sizing tool for this part).
4. Once this is completed, cover the based with modge podge in order to make it more solid and stable. Let dry.
5. In the mean time, start rolling whole pages of magazines into small tubes. Apply glue to the edge with the glue stick and press together.
6. Create enough of these to go around the base standing up.
7. With the glue gun, glue the rolls to the base. Start by gluing them vertically and attaching glue at the base and side meeting points.
8. Once completed, remove extra glue and decide if you want to keep it the magazine color or if you want to spray paint it.
